铸钢件在大气中由于氧、水分、酸、盐及潮湿空气引起的腐蚀或变色称为生锈或锈蚀。锈蚀可使具有很高强度的铸件表面层变为强度相当低的化合物。因此，通常要用防锈的办法来保护碳钢精密铸造件，使它保持原有的良好力学性能。
对碳钢铸件，其防锈的方法通常是采用防锈液处理。防锈液是在水中加人了添加剂的水溶液，目前国内广泛采用的添加剂是亚硝酸钠，其浓度一般配成20%~30%。其中，亚硝酸钠含量越多，则防锈能力就会越强，反之防锈能力弱。
但应注意的是，铸件进行防锈之前，对表面不洁净的铸件必须首先经过洗涤，清除精密铸造钢件表面的污浊物。常用洗涤的成分及配比为：重铬酸钾0.1%~0.2%，碳酸钠或磷酸钠0.15%~0.25%，水玻璃0.15%~0.3%，其余为水。洗涤温度75~90℃。洗涤并经干燥后即可进行防锈处理，但是经清理后铸件表面干净时，可免去洗涤过程而直接进行防锈处理。
